The name East Side Family came from four young men who grew up on the east side of Des Moines, IA and were as close as family. Three of these men have passed away, in order to keep their legacy alive the East Side Family, Inc. was created to give back to people in need.
When other young men were joining gangs, the four men Brian Wheels, Sr., Leonard Chandler, Troy Stewart, Sr. and Greg Leverette Sr., called themselves East Side Family. Greg is the sole survivor of the original 4 ESF men. The original members created and played on a dominate flag football team of the same name. Once Greg’s playing days were over, he decided to continue coaching the team. This provided a positive outlet for young men in the city.
In April 2016, The East Side Family became a non-profit organization with a mission to help someone in need. We believe that hunger is a root to many problems and if we can feed, educate and uplift people to help change lives we are willing to do that.
